Fusion Version 6.0.3 (1747349)
OS X 10.9.3
2014 MB Pro Hardware
Horizontal scrolling from the built-in trackpad does not work in MS Excel running the Windows 7 Pro VM.
This feature does not work making it more difficult to use Excel.
I'm a Parallels 9 user doing an eval on Fusion due to similar (but different) software quality issues in Parallels that create other ergonomic issues. I'm looking for a solution that will enable me to use Windows-native Excel on my Mac without bending over backward or fundamentally changing the way I work to accommodate software quality defects. My hope is that my issue with Fusion is just a settings thing.
Can anyone shed any light on this issue for me?
Thanks,
Adam
Never gonna work. This has been requested since version 4. Smooth scrolling is the other one. Neither are done.
Hi Adam,
Welcome to Fusion community! Thank you for posting the question.
I've tried your scenario just now - 'horizontal scrolling from the built-in trackpad MS Excel 2010 inside Windows 7 VM. '
However, I couldn't reproduce the problem.
Would you mind telling me your host hardware Info? Thank you.
Best Regards,
Amanda
Hi Adam,
To make sure it is not a user error, I'd like to provide the steps for horizontal scrolling for MS Excel.
1. VMware Fusion-> Preferences -> Keyboard&Mouse -> Mouse Shortcut tab. Make sure 'Button 3' is checked.
2. Inside the VM, in Excel, when you want to horizontal scrolling, you need to select any cell, and click 'command' key and trackpad and the same time. The cursor will change its shape.
Then you can perform the horizontal scrolling with your trackpad.
Best Regards,
Amanda
Amanda,
Unfortunately my trial expired long ago with the issue unresolved so I never purchased the full version and I can no longer run the trial version. I can tell you that my host hardware is a MacBook Pro bought in January 2014.
There are other users who had the same issue and replied to my posting, perhaps they own the software and can help you figure out where the issue is. One person suggested that this has been an open issue for years, so he might be a good place to start as he sounds like a longtime user.
Regards,
Adam

Hi aloshka,
Would you mind telling me the details of the problems? Thank you.
You mentioned "Never gonna work. This has been requested since version 4. " => However, horizontal scrolling in MS Excel 2007 and 2010 can work as expected in my environment.
So I am wondering the details of the issue you encountered, that would help to figure out the problem. Thank you in advance for your help.
Best Regards,
Amanda
I'm pulling this out of long-term storage (so it may be faulty neural RAM), but there was some nuance between the internal trackpad and external trackpads/mice/etc if I remember correctly.
So running Windows 8. Opened up Excel 2013. Have my mouse on a cell (selected, not editing). Using my magic mouse left and right, nothing happens. Using up and down, scrolls properly. VMware Tools installed Version 9.8.3, build-2075148. Win 8 Start menu, same issue. Left / right scrolling does nothing. rMBP trackpad, left/right works but only in start menu, or win8 only specific apps. Excel 2010-2013 does not work. Win7, horiz scrolling does not work at all.
New Win7 SP1 Pro machine. Excel 2010, no scrolling. Explorer, general windows, horizontal scrolling also does nothing.
Win 8 Google Chrome. Smooth scrolling enabled. No horiz scrolling, also no fluid scrolling. Only does line by line. Visual Studio 2013 SP2. Fluid scrolling turned on, line-by-line scrolling only, no horizontal scrolling.
And the reason I said since version 4, is I opened up a thread long time ago. Smooth scrolling + horizontal scrolling. Version 5 created semi-horizontal scrolling (only worked in win8, under win 8 programs, office, etc, did not work. Also only worked with Trackpad). This is why I'm saying nothing changed since version 4.
I know no one wants to hear the competitors doing something better, but Parallels had custom mouse driver for the last 4 versions, all with fluid perfect smooth scrolling (feels like a mac) and horizontal scrolling across ALL applications, using any mouse, including Magic Mouse.
Quite honestly, I LOVE VMWare. But I feel like the experience is a bit lagging, because of stupid small things like fluid scrolling and horizontal scrolling. If Parallels 10 didn't have a massive bug right now, I'd be using it. But realistically, I'd rather use VMWare. But you'd be surprised how something so small makes such a huge difference. When going through thousands of lines of code, it's easier to track when words go up/down smoothly instead of 1-5 lines per/sec. Even MS figured this out with Office 2013 as it's fluid scrolling enabled, but does not work in Fusion (still line-by-line). And when a line is too long, much easier to just flick to the right/left and see the rest of it, w/o having to turn on word wrap. Not to mention how useful horizontal scrolling is in Excel.
Ironically in VMware Workstation running on a tablet, touch is flawless but external mice, same issue.
If Parallels 10 didn't have a massive bug right now, I'd be using it.
What is the bug?
If you have Parallels Tools installed and you RDP (MS Remote Desktop) into the guest, it is about 30x slower than if you didn't have Parallels Tools installed. I suspect it's something with the network driver they use–they use custom drivers for pretty much everything. I've escalated the issue to them, and they are looking into it; but I don't think masses of people RDP into their guests machines from other computers so a fix might not be on the way for a very long time.
Hi aloshka,
Thank you for your love of VMware! We really appreciate it.
I've tried all your scenario just now - it works well for me. So i think there should be some missing steps at your side. 🙂
I read your steps on how you play on horizontal scrolling. I found that you didn't mention you use command key before you did the horizontal scrolling.
I'd like to provide you the steps, would you like to try it again? Thank you for your patient.
1. First, you need to enable the Mouse‘s Button 3 from VMware Fusion menu-> Preferences -> Keyboard&Mouse tab -> Mouse Shortcut tab. Make sure 'Button 3' is checked.
2. Inside the VM, in Excel, when you want to horizontal scrolling, you need to select any cell, and click 'command' key and trackpad (for your case, you need to click the left button of your mouse) and the same time. The cursor will change its shape. After that you can freely do the horizontal scrolling.
Best Regards,
Amanda
The CMD+Click works great in excel. It's not really horizontal or vertical scrolling, but works. Seems to work in outlook & IE as well. But outside of that, no where else really. Definitely solves the Excel problem, but I do wish for true horizontal scrolling.
