View Feature Pack - RTAV: How to increase audio quality

Hi, we are testing View 5.3  with feature pack installed. RTAV is really great, specially with webcam. But audio quality from microphone is limited to 8 khz and it seems to be an hard limit.

There is a VMware KB explaining how to increase video quality but not for audio. Is there a way to change audio settings for RTAV? And if not, why this very low limit? We understand 8 khz is just OK for Skype calls but it could be better.

PS: We are using Windows client 2.3 and guest is Windows 7 x64. Thanks!

hi

unfortunately at this time - you are right that the audio is limited to 8kHz, mono.

This is something we have been thinking about making adjustable - but up until your post - we have had no feedback that suggested we needed to and so it has remained at this sample rate since the initial release.

Would you be willing to elaborate on your use case so we can better understand the requirements and identify what sort of audio controls you'd ideally like to see.

I can't promise we will implement nor provide a timescale, but having your feedback will definitely help.

many thanks,

peterB

Hi,

Thanks to confirm that for the moment the audio limit is fixed. If we can help to improve it for the future releases I will be glad so I will explain our needs.

We will move a classroom to VMware View this summer and this lab is use to teach foreign languages: english and spanish. We are a french high school just to to be precise... During our tests, we found that the quality of audio recording with RTAV  is not as what the teachers and students are used to experience right now. No needs to tell that in every change we do we try to offer at minimum the same level of experience to our users. With RTAV, the recordings lessons and oral productions from students are not as good as what we see now. As I said, the 8khz  could be OK for Skype but for languages courses is not acceptable. With RTAV, the audio quality could be compare to phone cellular conversation. Not bad but if it could be better it would be great and the users will not complain...

For the moment it is not a big deal since we decide to not using RTAV because audio quality is not enough. We will instal the Teradici audio driver that give great bi-directional audio quality. We found it is easier to use USB audio headset instead of analog. USB headset work on every clients without special configuration but we had some trouble with analog device since it is depend on local client audio driver.  But we need to put an USB redirection exclusion on the clients.

Thanks for the information. This is useful.

one quick point - RTAV works with USB audio devices as well as analog. (although that doesnt change your problem with the audio quality).

Question - is Mono still acceptable, or do you have any needs for stereo recording? I presume a higher sample rate, but with mono would be OK for your needs. Pls confirm,

many thanks,

Hi,

I confirm that mono is OK for our needs and just a higher sampler rate would be fine. We just need to record voice with better quality, no music or professional recordings. Teradici audio driver is not limited and it would be great to see the same quality with RTAV. By default 8khz is good enough for common usage but for some specific needs a new setting that we can set would be exactly what we are looking for.

Thanks!

Bringing this one back from the dead,

ran into this issue with the new Cisco Proximity client.  It needs 44 or 48 KHz to operate.  would really like to use it with RTAV.  Any updates?

I suspect that this will work if I pass a USB mic thru to the desktop, but that's not practical as it will experience the problems RTAV was created to solve.

Thank!
