F*in awesome. For the past week I've been having the same problem with chrome. Not only that, but also IE crashes when I try to login. We dont have flash support in our Firefox browsers. So now I'm forced to use even more limited html5 version of web client.

@ vmware : if you don't have fully working thick client by next year when we are upgrading our cluster, you are not on the list of hypervisors we choose from. period.

          There's a petition to open-source the C# Client.

Petition VMware to Open Source ESXi Thick Client

I doubt if VMware will listen, but it's worth a shot

I have to agree as everyone else.  I've been heavily using VMware vSphere products (ESXi and vCenter) since v3.X and being forced to use the web-client in 6.5 is brutal.  It takes me so much longer to perform everyday administrative tasks.  I've put off using the web client since it was heavily introduced in late 4.X releases and now I can't anymore since it's required.

VMware, you're destroying an industry leading product.  I've been a VMware fan boy and multiple version VCP for years and this is the first time I've ever even considered switching hypervisor platforms.  Wake up...

Couldn't resist chiming in to this excellent post which sums up all my frustrations regarding this horrendous web client. It is so bad. Glad I am not alone, but still p*$$ed that these frustrations we all have, are STILL  falling on seemingly deaf ears - however many years later.

Please, VMware wake up! Nice try, but it just is a terrible terrible way to manage the environment.  Bring back the C# client now.  IE crashes, Chrome shows a blank screen or depending on what day it is it may work, but most likely not, Opera lol, Firefox 50/50 but no Remote/Web Console mostly or some other oddball crash.  JC, I detest having to even login and use your once awesome product, because this web client sucks up all my time to the point that we are spending more than 40% of the time simply trying to login.

Starting to look at other products for next renewal because obviously you dont care about customers and newsflash, you're stuff aint cheap anyway.

P.S.  My one friendly suggestion for anyone in this thread, I send in a support ticket every so often "gently" reminding them that web client is atrocious and is flawed just in the hopes they see it (w/ screenshots and same old detail we all experience). Pathetic as this may seem, my hope is that maybe if they start seeing their support queued up with more tickets generated for the same damn issue, (e.g crashing, slowness, whatever) it will begin getting attention of someone who can make some noise from the inside. Power in #s.

I will also chime in here. I can also confirm that if Vmware continues on this arrogant path of ignoring it's customers, then we too will gladly jump off this sinking shit storm.

This Web Client is a fucking joke. Seriously.

Trying to config SRM is a joke. This fucking web client just sits there a spins its wheels over and over again. "Sites" never fucking displays the sites. Restart web client services. sure. wait another fucking 20 min to do anything. How is this being productive you pundits.

Fuck your Web Client, Fuck your HTML5. Give use back the Fat Boy.

This is why I have always avoided the web client, plain and simple, most web interfaces are trashy, slow, prone to issues depending on browser version etc...

One main thing that put me off the web client, was me imagining the filthy coding behind mounting an ISO in a container like a web browser and streaming it to the host, I have little doubts that it would ever work with stability, if at all.

There was never anything wrong with the vSphere client.

                    Lost in Web Client:

                    • Ability to use a client ISO (this was tremendously useful for one-off VM builds)
                    • Ability to export to OVA

                    Severely impaired:

                    • Ability to create or import OFV/Appliance

JAVA™ may be the answer to this.

Oracle eBusiness Suite, Limewire & the NHS ESR system are 3 very good examples of nice looking and reliable java apps, 2 of those run independantly in a browser.  Also, every KVM console I've ever encountered has been java powered, not nice looking but working in good order on any operating system.

I believe that this sort of approach would bring stability.

Using things like activex/signed code, javascript, HTML5, browser plugins, all mixed together, will result in failure at all costs.

Respectfully, JAVA™ is not the answer to anything! Oracle has gone so far our of its way to attack its own user base and make itself un-licensable in a VMware environment, many admins (myself included) will not spec. Oracle anything. Oracle will be a footnote in the history of IT (much like Novell) before the current generation of admins retires!

Moreover, how many times have you opened a browser, only to see that JAVA had changed and you could no longer access the resources (like a switch) you needed to without first updating JAVA? JAVA is the web-client all over, yet even more intrusive because it will try to install "yahoo toolbar" or som other BS on enterprise systems!

We own two Nimble storage arrays. About a month ago we upgraded firmware knowing that we were jumping from a web interface that used Flash to one that uses HTML5. So far I am impressed. The new HTML5 interface is responsive and seems to work just fine. Now, a web based client for vSphere I am guessing is a more complicated piece to get right. Can HTML5 provide a great web based interface for vSphere, as good as the C# client? I am not a programmer so I would like to get others opinions.

Rumor has it that VMWare will release a new HTML5 client with full functionality when ESXi 6.7 is released. Is there hope?

I find it interesting that major VMware thinkers, like GOSTEV of Veeam, are beginning to cover alternatives to VMware regularly. In his last two e-mail digests, he covered KVM, (including Proxmox and oVirt)

The client issues are huge in many of our lives, but so are other, equally troubling issues like PSOD in all ESXi 6.5 VMware Knowledge Base - SINCE IT WAS RELEASED! VMware executives have had their head in the clouds (literally), for about 6 years now! They don'y listen to their user base (administrators like us) they don't listen to their customers (the guys to whom we recommend VMware in the first place, A.K.A. our bosses), and they are directly adverse to much of their partner ecosystem (the guys that sell us the VMware we use).

I am actively starting to use other hypervisors in production (KVM) and I will estimate about one more FUBAR version before I shift the majority of production systems off the vSphere platform. VMware needs to get rid of its Steve Ballmer (basically everybody that has been influential in the last 6 years) and find its Satya Nadella! Every indication so far is the absorption by Dell has not improved things!

The Embedded Host Client (https://esxi/ui) is HTML5 and works great, but is missing major components (like you can't see LUN numbers in Create Datastore).

The HTML5 for vCenter (https://vcenter/ui) is also incomplete.

There is hope, but there is a huge deficit to make-up since the regression of vSphere 6.5. If vSphere 6.7 is close to the actual functionality of 6.0 using C# client, I will be surprised!

                                • OVA functionality missing
                                • OVF functionality strictly handicapped
                                • Permissions issues
                                • No client ISOs for VMs
                                • Slowness
                                • Missing items in menus (like LUN NUMBER in Embedded Host Client)
                                • Much more

A few years ago it seems that VMWare wanted to abandoned single tenant (aka in house) installs and force everyone into a multi-tenant architecture with the inclusion of their own SSO/LDap.   Why?  Cause they wanted everyone with extra capacity to resell it through them.   I'm in the financial industry and that is simply not an option.   While chasing these drunken Wall Street analysis dream other hypervisor vendors have caught up.

We are actually looking at a migration because the client tools are simply that bad.   The recent Flash issue has just pushed us that much more down that path.   Access to fully manage my infrastructure should not be dependent on 3rd party vendors.

Just got finished deploying 13 new hosts, configuring, assigning host profiles, remediating, applying updates, etc.  It is simply unbelievable how f'ing horrible the web client is whenever you have a very large amount of work to do.  I haven't used the fat client for probably 6+ months but part of this upgrade involved connecting a VCSA 6.5 to an older 6.0 server and migrating some VM's off of it.  I fire up the fat client for that server and it was like going from driving a pickup truck to a sports car; I had completely forgotten how much faster it is performing tasks in the fat client.  Seriously night and day.  Doing bulk changes in the web client is simply an exercise in frustration.  Half the time the dialog boxes don't even reflect the correct server; try enabling and disabling ssh on a bunch of stuff, it may not even be talking to the server you thin it is.  Someone at vmware really needs to be slapped.
