Virtual machine transfer from one host to another.

    2Hijack Novice

Does anyone knows how to transfer one or multiple virtual machine from one host to another?

I have 2 host setup with different hardware on each machine and i'm trying to take a virtual machine from one host and copy it over to the other host under "virtual machine directory".  This will work if i do it from the same host, but i got an error when trying to copy it to another host.

error[/b]: " Cannot open the disk 'v:\virtual machines\windows server 2003 edition\windows server 2003 edition.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on

      Reason: Faile to lock file

I'm new at VMware any help will be apperciated.

Can you please post the contents of your vmware.log file after you're unsuccessful in booting the VM on the second machine

I think that this probably is the problem:

                Jul 07 16:31:24: vmx| Error opening lock file V:\Vitual Machines\Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition (2)\Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition.vmdk.lck (3)

Can you take a look  in the VM folder on the host where the VM's will not start for .lck files and if any exist remove them.  Once this is done please try to restart the VM and see if it will start.

                EDIT:

Also,  please make sure that both of these two files exist:

                'V:\Vitual Machines\Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition (2)\Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition.vmdk'

                and

                'v:\virtual machines\windows server 2003 standard edition (2)\Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition-000002.vmdk'

                  Thanks for the recommendation!

There was 2 lock files that i deleted and after deleting i restarted the host server, but still getting the same error when trying to open the VM.

                                  I'm missing this file

                                  "Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition-000001.vmdk"

                                  any ideas?

Never mind the filenames -  next time better use names that are unique in your environment and don't eat every thing that VMware offers as a default '-)

Same dir as the vmx you launch

I tried it and is still come up with the same error.  I'll try to reinstall everything and take it slower this time.  Thanks for all your hlep!

Don't give up so early !

Do you have a hexeditor that can open very large files?

Have you checked write permissions for the new location?
