vSphere Web Client for Mac with Non-US Keyboard

Hey!

At first, here's my Setup:

VMWare vSphere Web Client: Version 5.5.0 Build 1441077

Client-Integration-Plug-In: Client Support-Version 5.5.0 Build 1279455

Browser: Chrome Version 32.0.1700.77

Flash Player: MAC 12,0,0,41

When I connect to a VM Console on my Mac, using the vSphere Web Client with a German System and a German Keyboard, the Key-Mappings seem to be US. I'm very enthusiastic about using the VMWare vSphere Web Client on my Mac but as I often need Symbols and Characters like Ä,Ü,Ö,ß I have to wait for a fix.

In the following Post the User MikeH_KGH is describing the same Problems on a Swedish system. (Page 4)

Re: vSphere Web Client and Mac OS X

Can you please check the Problem?

Thank you in Advance!

Yes, I do encounter the same problem.

But it's not just an US keyboard layout, it's more like MikeH_KGH is describing. A lot of characters seem to be randomly distributed, especially keys like - / etc.

Please fix this misbehavior, the console is unusable under Mac OS X, regardless which browser is used. I've tested it with Chrome, Safari and Mozilla.

Cheers

Mike

Yes, with Italian keyboard there are a lot of issues related to keyboard.

It's very annoying issue.

Not clear how to fix it, if possible.

Hi vNEX,

thanks for the link.

At least for me adding US International PC as second keyboard layout helps.

Choosing this keyboard layout when working with the vSphere Web Client has the funny effect that the keyboard layout in the virtual machine is German. So no need to learn the US layout by heart :smileycool:

The trick with US-layout on the machine running the web client console helps a little, as it activates my german layout keyboard in most parts int the web client console.

Some vital keys do not work though, e.g. <, >, | that are found on one key in the german layout that is not available on a US-layout. Also Ctrl-C doesn't work, so it looks like the Ctrl key is not found as well.

My machines are mostly Linux btw., not Mac.

Same probleme here (french keyboard). Right US layout helps...

It's really un-efficient to work with this web client. No other way is posible like VSphere client does not show new 5.5 features, nor vm with recent VM version. I filled a Product Feature Request, with no hope!

Problem with OS X Swedish keyboard layout as well. Typing the ampersand & character on the OS X vSphere web client comes out a forward slash / on the target VM. Switching to U.S. International PC should resolve the issue, but it does not. Changing the keyboard layout to US did solve the issue for me.

There are basically only 2 major hardware keyboard from Apple: U.S and International.

1. U.S. keyboard is used mainly for U.S English. It looks like a keyboard from the US, the return key is wider left to right than it is tall vertically, and if intended for US English it will have a dollar sign printed above the 4 key.

2. International keyboard is used for nearly everything else from UK English, Australian English, Swedish, French, Spanish and you name it. There's even even a keyboard named "International English." On the international keyboard the return key is taller vertically than it is wide left to right and the currency denomination will be printed on on the 4 key or 3 key depending on the target language. So for UK English it's a British Pound mark £. In most other countries, like on my Swedish keyboard it's a Euro symbol €, even though Sweden is not on the Euro.

See Apple KBase HT2841

So, just to reiterate, I would recommend people using the international keyboards on the Mac to try setting the input method to US, rather than US international. Though depending on the characters you use, you may have to switch back to your default keyboard input mapping.

It appears to me that the mapping is always done, even if there is no need.

A fix would probably to use the keycodes instead of the characters and send them directly to the machine.

If this is not possible from within the browser, then an inverse mapping (e.g. German > US) has to be performed as a pre-step.

Browser System: Germany layout

When I press the ":" key (right of "L" key), it is translated to a "Ö" which would be correct, if I want to map an US keyboard to a German keyboard.

When I either switch the keyboard in my Browser System or my Virtual System, the mapping is performed correctly!

Hello every one.

I got the same problem (using french keyboard on vsphere web client not working under under Windows.

There is a kb that explain the problem (KB2071245) with no solution yet.

vSphere Client doesn't do the trick since i got an error connecting to console with it (mks has been disconnected...)

I found a solution :

Install VMRC 7.0.1 on your computer

then open your web client and open a console

system ask you i you want to use the new vmrc app to open vmrc file.

Accept-it

That does the trick : keyboard mapping is good and working.
