ESXi inside KVM

Hello!

I wonder, if it is possible to run ESXi 5.0/5.1 inside KVM (proxmox) ?

I need to run few for testing purposes. I cannot setup any other virtualization software.

I need only ESXi itself, even without virtual machines inside it:)

First, you would have to create an ESXi driver for the Realtek 8139 network interface. See Re: Vmware ESXI within Hyper-v (server 2012) networking issue for a similar issue with respect to Hyper-V and its tulip driver.

Hello!

R8139 is not problem.

Problem is, that booting of installer is disrupted at "Initiallizing Timing...".

Can you hook up a virtual serial port and see what the last few messages logged are?

I see absolutely nothing on the serial console (though I might not have configured it correctly). But I do get a nice purple screen of death from the installer, which might be useful.

Judging by the values in RCX, RAX, and RDX, I would guess that ESXi is trying to write the value 1 to PMU event selector 1, and kvm is responding with a general protection fault.

Does kvm provide PMU support?

There should be a 30ms delay at that point, but if it is confused about the TSC frequency, that delay may be longer.  Is that the entire serial log, or is there more before that?  It would be nice to know what it thinks the TSC frequency is.

That was the entire log. After that nothing more happens. I see low cpu usage on the host for the guest, no further I/O though.

Are there any further kernelopts worth trying?

I already gave notimerEnableHPET a go without noticeable difference...

The line that says "Running inside a VM; adjusting spinout timeout to 180 seconds" would suggest that KVM implements enough of our backdoor interface to make it look like we're running under a VMware hypervisor.  When we're running in this environment, we use the backdoor to get the host TSC frequency.  I suspect that KVM doesn't implement the "GETMHZ" backdoor call, so we are confused about the TSC frequency.  The 30ms delay turns into ... 30 hours?  30 years?

I think I found it.  The problem is not with kvm, but with qemu.  I found the following in the qemu sources:

Since they implement GETVERSION, they fool us into thinking that we're running in a VMware VM.  However, they do not implement GETHZ or GETMHZ, so we probably end up getting garbage back for the TSC frequency.  It doesn't look like there's an option to disable our backdoor port, but it does look like it is enabled only for kvm (not for Xen).

I think you'll have to change qemu to disable our backdoor port and recompile.  It should be as simple as this one-line change to hw/i386/pc_piix.c:

Applying that patch results in the vmkernel loading and crashing later with a nice PSOD.

The faulting instruction is xsetbv.  I don't think %rax should be zero here, but I believe that at this point %edx:%eax should be a legal value obtained from cpuid leaf 0xd.

Is it possible that kvm reports xsave support without supporting cpuid leaf 0xd?  Can you dump out the CPUID data for a kvm VM on this host (a linux VM would be fine)?  I can cook up a program to do so if necessary.

The attached program should suffice.  Please compile it and run it inside a linux VM under KVM on the same host where the ESX VM gave you a PSOD.

I was trying to accomplish the same thing and found this post.  I haven't setup a virtual serial yet.  Here is my screenshot and the cpuid is attached.  I am running Virtualization Preview Repository - FedoraProject so it should have the latest version of qemu and libvirt from rawhide.

Oops the cpuid.txt is from the parent host.  Working on getting it from a virtual machine.

I think this is a different failure from the XSAVE failure.  Can you attach a virtual serial port and post the serial output?

ESX is trying to read MSR 0xc0010001 (PerfEvtSel1).  It appears that kvm/qemu does not implement that MSR and raises a general protection fault when ESX tries to read it.  As far as I know, that MSR is not optional (i.e. there is no way for a CPU to report that it does not implement it).
