Using Host Profiles to add hosts to Distributed Switches

I'm attempting to use host profiles to add hosts to vSphere Distributed Switches.   The process is failing and the process is actually reconfiguring the management network settings on my host to that of a different vDS.  Then it is removing the default gateway entirely leaving the hosts disconnected from vCenter.  VMware Support says it is a bug, namely http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1037576

They don't have an easy workaround.  Has anyone been successful in using host profiles to apply vDSes to hosts?  Any pointers?

I'm using vSphere 6.5 and having this same issue..... Was this never really able to be done w/ Host Profiles?

Did you try the workaround from the KB article?
