"Access denied" when attempting to start vmplayer image migrated from windows 7 to window 8 in parallel.

Hello,

I originally built and used a windows 2008 vmplayer image on a windows 7 box and it worked great. I wanted to migrate to a different machine running mac, with windows 8 running in parallels.

I copied the over the "Windows 2008" virtual machine folder to the new vitual machine folder on the windows 8 box running in parallels on Mac.  This is what i get.

First Prompt:

"This virtual machine appears to be in use. If this virtual machine is not in use, press "Take Ownership" button to obtain ownership of it.  Otherwise, press "Cancel" button to avoid damaging it.

I click "Take Ownership"

Next Prompt:

"Failed to open virtual machine:  Taking ownership of this virtual machine failed.  A serious error occured: Permission Denied."

Is there some pre-configuration I need to do to get this working right?

Thanks!

Brian

If I read your OP correctly you're here in the VMware Player forum trying to get help for trying to run a VM under Parallels, is that correct?  If yes then here is the link to Parallels Support.

As far as copying a VM it needs to be shutdown from within the Guest OS, not suspended and VMware Player closed before making the copy.  Under that condition there should not be any .lck folders/files in the folder that contains the files that comprise the VM.  At this point  that ends any of this bring a VMware issue per se.  In other words if you then copy the folder that contains the files that comprise the VM to a Mac to run under Parallels and something isn't working for you then you need to contact Parallels Support.  As far as any permission issues on the Mac there again this is not a VMware issue, it's a End User Issue.  Meaning you as the End User on the Mac have to resolve any permissions issues on the Mac yourself.  Additionally you cannot just copy a VM created in VMware Player and expect to directly run it under Parallels it has to first be converted by Parallels to run under Parallels and this makes a separate copy and does not modify the original VMware VM.

Again any issue you have during this process is not a VMware issue and you should contact Parallels Support for help with their product! Smiley Wink

Hey WoodyZ,

I'm not looking for support for parrellels.  My questions are vmware specific.  Alot of articles I've read about running vmware inside of a virtual requires special consideration/configuration to work successfully.  All of my issues are coming from the vmware player so I want to make sure there was not some step I was missing to successfully get vmware player to run inside of a virtual machine.  Here is what I have done so far.

1. Removed all *.lck files and folders.

2. Removed the "readonly" attribute from the image folder (easy enough but can be overlook sometimes).

These two things actually solved my access denied issue, but now I get this error:

vcpu-0:VM-entry failed; VMCS valid (error code 7)

A log file is available in "C:\Users\briangullo\Documents\Virtual Machines\Windows Server 2008 R2 x64\vmware.log".

I've also changed my cpu setting on the vm image to: "Virtualize Intel VT-x/EPT or AMD-V/RVI." per the article Running Nested VM's.  I've attached the log file just incase your interested.

Thanks in advanced for your help.

Well from your subject line plus the first two sentences of your OP it certainly reads like you're trying to run a VM your created under VMware Player in Parallels on a Mac not necessarily as a netted VM running in VMware Player running under Parallels.   Anyway if you got it working that's what's important!
