"A fault has occurred causing a virtual CPU to enter the shutdown state" on boot of VM.

Hi,everyone!

I'm running VMW 9.0.1 on a ThinkPad x230i  (i3 3110M CPU), running Windows 7 64bit, trying to reboot Ubuntu12.10 physical disk after install

Power on VM, I see the BIOS screen, and then immediately get the "virtual CPU has entered shutdown state" error.

If this fault had occurred outside of a virtual machine, it would have caused the physical machine to restart. The shutdown state can be reached by incorrectly configuring the virtual machine, a bug in the guest operating system, or a problem in VMware Workstation.

I've been searching the VMWare site as well as doing Google searches, but, haven't been able to find much on this error.

can anyone offer me a clue?

Thanks!

Hi,

I had the same problem and it came from the fact that memory configured for the virtual machine was too low.

It was badly configured to 4 Mb instaed of 4 Gb.

I was just having the same error while trying to install a Cisco ACS server on VMware workstation 10.2 running on windows 7 64 bit. Built the VM using 4GB,60GB and 2 vcpu's, choose Other linux 3.x Kernel. I built the VM machine again but his time I choose 'other Linux 2.6.x kernel 64 bit '. I Think that if you have other guess os options you should try those it seems that the guess OS is compatible with the OS of the PC or something..

Hope this helps to  others

I believe that there may have been some SMEP virtualization issues with Workstation 9.0.1.  Try disabling SMEP by adding the following to your VM's configuration file:

featMask.vm.cpuid.SMEP = "Val:0"

My problem is:"A fault has occurred causing a virtual CPU to enter the shutdown state. If this fault had occurred outside of a virtual machine, it would have caused the physical machine to restart. the shutdown state can be reached by incorectly configuring the virtual machine, a bug in the guest operating system, or a problem in vmware workstation.........."

I try to change my hiren's boot cd from 10.0 to 15.0. It's done.

Hope this try can help some one solve their's problem like this!
