I have been having trouble getting the update of the VMWare tools installed. The autoupdate fails and says I should contact vmware or sysadmin.
If I download and run the exe from http://softwareupdate.vmware.com/cds/vmw-desktop/player/5.0.1/894247/windows/packages/tools-windows-9.2.2.exe.tar I get "The MSI '' failed" error.
Now, I was getting that message from workstation, when I tried to update workstation. I ended up manually uninstalling it completely (deleting registry keys and such based on this: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1031302 and this http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1308.
I'm hoping maybe someone has something like that for the VMWare tools install? Apparently it is separate from the workstation installer.
(I'm running 64 bit Win 8; trying to install tools 9.2.2 )
I ended up using the instructions from this link:
There is a comment at the end that talks about how they had to also delete any registry entries with tools-windows in them for the updater to work. I had to do that as well.
Hopefully I don't have to do that everytime they update the tools.
