Need to move an ESXi 5 host to a cluster - will VM stay up?

I have one ESXi 5.0 host running in my vSphere datacenter that is a stand alone host with it's resources listed as "Grafted from <IP Address>". This was a test installation that now has one production VM running on it. If I want to move this host into an already existing DRS/HA cluster, can I just choose "Disconnect" on the host, then select the cluster to which I want to add it, select "Add host to cluster" to put in in that cluster, and still have the production VM running on the stand alone host remain running while the host successfully is added to the cluster?

And no, I will never have a stand alone host again. 🙂

Thanks!

Hi,

if you disconnect an ESXi within vCenter all the VMs on this will stay up and running.

So migrate a standalone host to an existing cluster thats what you have to do:

1. Check if the stabdalone host and the hosts in the cluster are the same hardware. You cant mix AMD and Intel based hosts.

If they are not the same hardware (or same CPU to be correct), activate EVC on your cluster. If you try to add the host now to the cluster

you probably get a problem because of your running VM which is using certain feature of the CPU on the standalone host. You have to shutdown the      VM and add the host afterwards.

2. Determine where to place the VMs of the standalone host in the cluster (folder and resource pool wise)

3. Disconnect the host.

4. Remove the host from the inventory. You will lose all the performance data of the host.

5. Add the host to the cluster using the "add host" option.

that will work fine.

the vm doesnt go down just becasue it isnt conencted to a vcenter.
