VMware Studio 2.6 fails to boot transient VM

    alexraasch Lurker

I am using VMware Studio 2.6 to create a virutal appliance and I use VMware Workstation 7.1.6 on a Linux Mint 14 virtual machine as the provisioning engine. I tried several times to build a Windows 2008 appliance as well as Ubuntu 10.04.4. On each of the 10 tries, I get the following error message:

16/02/2013 12:40:13 [info]  Transporting VM from Studio to provisioning host; this may take a few  minutes...
16/02/2013 12:42:04 [info]  Waiting for the transient VM to boot up.
16/02/2013 12:42:34 [warn] Failed  to detect a powered up transient VM on Workstation 192.168.1.14
16/02/2013 12:42:34 [error]  Encountered a fatal build error!

In the VM profiles, I only chose to install the OS from the respective ISO images and VMware Tools, nothing more.

Has anyone ever had this problem and how can I debug what's going on exactly?

Did you look at what was happening on the transient vm's console?

There might also be some useful information in the logs you'll find in the root directory.

The transient VM never shows up in VMware Workstation on the provisioning host. Seems it can't be booted. Also, in the verbose log the error appears right after the VM was tranferred to the provisioning host:

hmm, I am getting almost EXACTLY the same problem only I am on Workstation 9 running with Win7 as my host.

I am doing exactly what you did, just trying to see if I can build a vm with CentOS6.4 and installing the vm tools.

It is very difficult to sort out this out, I've looked in every log I could find, read the docs/trouble shooter etc., I can run a vm from the command line on Win7 (I have cygwin set up there if its relevant.) SSH everything works fine.... but no vm!

I must have missed something somewhere...

              Thanks  for *ANY* info

I went ahead and built this again. This time I was able to find the "advanced" build option to save the vm.

Still no luck, can't tell anything..but the logs are in this post

                What did I miss?

(I've stripped this down to only installing CentOS6.4- I know the dvd iso is good, and the vm tools, fails with or without them anyway.)

                thanks

Hi, you can access console while the transient vm is being built. Are you seeing anything useful there?

CentOS 6.4 is a new release there might be some library compatibility problems. There is really not much useful here in these logs which can happen. For future reference though it would probably be better to use pastebin or a similar sharing site vs posting here where the formatting isn't the best.

I noticed that there was NO ONE else in the last poll using VMware workstation 9 with Win7  (cygwin) provisioning a Linux/Centos 6.4 machine.. Maybe some people are now?

I have been experimenting and I found a new error and now have something interesting happening.

                    a) in the "build" tab I  carefully crafted a new path using cygwin style paths which it would not accept until I said "linux" (even though it has a cygwin label on one of the choices that would not work)

                    b) I moved the provision directory from the "recommended" c:\vmware_studio_user to one in my

home directory (I am the provisioning user and also happen to have admin permissions)

Then I did a build and got a NEW error message in the build log:

Here are some possible reasons for the failure:

                    - The VM failed to obtain a network address if it is configured to run on a DHCP network;

                    - The VM ran on a network that could not communicate with the Studio;

                    - The VM failed to report its network address to Studio through its web server (port 80)

So, I did yet another build, and this time when it was waiting for the VM to boot up I just moused over

and clicked on the vm file and ... !!..... it booted, and started installing and doing all sorts of things like it knew what it was doing..meanwhile the build log is filling up with stuff and then, I can see that the vm finishes and then

shuts itself down... but the build log is still making the dots and saying its "creating"

I am waiting to see if it thinks its done to check out the build.. but i think it is now hung- the build started awhile ago at least 30 minutes...

Any chance of getting someone online here with me? I am getting close, maybe I'm close enough and I can just cut this off and build my Vapp? I'll let it sit for awhile yet and let you know how it works out..

                    Here is the log:

Yes this is similar as before if you are not seeing anything within the Studio status logs you will need to see what is happening on the transient vm side. Can you access the console? Are you able access a root shell? It's possible the kickstart failed or hung the process so on the console you should be able to cycle Alt-F1, Alt-F2 ... to see if anything is useful on the terminals.

When I went through the logs it looked like the hold-up was the vmrun command.

I found that the way it was trying to run it was incorrect for Workstation 9-- in that for workstation 9 it needed the "T" and ws  command like this:

vmrun -T  ws "name of provision file.vmx"

it was trying to run it without that and it would not run. So, when I hit it and made the vm start up it provisioned it and I got  much further along. In fact, I think it finished setting the entire thing up but for some reason it hung on the VMwarestudio.. maybe because it was expecting that command to come back.

(because I had marked the "advanced" save build it was not deleted as it was marked as "failed")

I was able to take the resulting build and it booted right up with a menu and everything..

Are you able to run other 64 bit VMs in workstation on your windows 7 host?  I know I have had some issues in the past running 64 bit OSes when I did not have virtualization technology enabled in the bios.  Just one thought as to why they VMs may not be able to power on.
