“Connection for the USB device was unsuccesful” error

I cannot connect my USB device to guest OS when I use one of the USB ports on my machine.

VMware gives an error like:

The connection for the USB device was unsuccessful. The device is currently in use.

However, when I use the other USB port, the device successfully connects to the guest OS. How can I fix it?

My Host OS is Windows 7 64-bit.

I doubt it will have anything to do with the SD/MMC.

This might be helpful. I wrote and published this few days back.

Host and guest OS USB 3.0 and virtual xHCI support with Workstation 9

Is it a USB 3.0 port on the physical machine?

The ports through which it works, is it a USB 2.0 port?

Are all USB devices connected to the VM through that particular port affected?

In Workstation 9 this can happen independant of any issues with USB 3.
Even on a host with USB 2 only that produced absolute reliable results in WS 7 I get this problems.

It does not help to shut down all VMs, restart vmusbarbitrator and Workstation.

The only reliable fix is a reboot of the host.

It helps to change your typical work style and really use USB-devices with care. Do not unplug/replug any devices if there are ways around it.

Do not expect that VMs that used USB can be suspended - strange things will happen ...

Be very careful if you use USB-disks mounted in the host.
Starting a suspended VM can steal the device from the host - and only a reboot can solve the issue

Thank you.

USB Port that caused the problem has USB 3.0.

Actually, it was working fine until I tried to mount an SD/MMC Card reader to guest OS.
