ESXi 4.1 upgrade

Hello all,

I have a pair of IBM x3950 x5s running ESXi 4.1.0 (320137).

In order to upgrade my vCenter to v5, I assume I need to get these guys to 4.1.0 patch 9 (874690) first?

Other than needing to upgrade all the vmtools on all of these, can anyone forsee any issues doing that upgrade?

Patching the hosts to at least 4.1 U1 is only required if you are going to use vCenter Server 5.0. With vCenter Server 5.1 all 4.1 host builds are supported (see http://partnerweb.vmware.com/comp_guide2/sim/interop_matrix.php)

Yeah, Eventually I want to upgrade my vcenter 4 to vcenter 5 and manage all my 4.1 hosts.

So I only need to upgrade from 4.1 patch 2 (320127)  to 4.1 U1 (348481)?

If you are going to use vCenter Server 5.0 then yes, 4.1 U1 would be sufficient according to the Interoperability Matrixes. However, if you are going to patch the hosts anyway, why not go with the latest patch.
