trouble with VMware player

Sir,

I am having a problem running VMware player. It was working fine the last 5 hours, but suddenly it stopped working. The following message is being pooped out when i am trying to open the player.

The operation on file "E:\appliance50-17\appliance50-17.vmdk" failed.
If the file resides on a remote file system, make sure that the network connection and the server where this disk resides are functioning properly. If the file resides on removable media, reattach the media.
Select Retry to attempt the operation again.
Select Cancel to end this session.
Select Continue to forward the error to the guest operating system.

Retry is not woking. But,when i clicked the continue button the following message is popped.

VMware Player unrecoverable error: (vmx)

NOT_IMPLEMENTED d:/build/ob/bora-894247/bora/lib/aioManagers/aioWin32Completion.c:3173

A log file is available in "E:\appliance50-17\vmware.log".

You can request support.

To collect data to submit to VMware technical support, run "vm-support".

We will respond on the basis of your support entitlement.

I checked the internet connection.Everything's fine. Please do solve my problem asap.

Truly,

Yogesh

Welcome to the Community,

what is your "E:" drive? A local disk, an USB drive, ...? Are you able to access it from the Explorer?

What I would do first is to check whether there are any hint in the vmware.log file mentioned in the error message. As a second step - with local storage - run chkdsk e: /f to see if there are any isuues with the file system.

According to the log file there's a logical issue with the virtual disk's grain table.

... DISKLIB-SPARSECHK: [E:\appliance50-17\appliance50-17.vmdk] GT Error (EE): GT[129][160] = 8388480 / 8388480
... DISKLIB-SPARSECHK: [E:\appliance50-17\appliance50-17.vmdk] Resolving      GT[129][160] = 0
... DISKLIB-SPARSECHK: [E:\appliance50-17\appliance50-17.vmdk] GT Error (EE): GT[193][79] = 8388608 / 8388608
... DISKLIB-SPARSECHK: [E:\appliance50-17\appliance50-17.vmdk] Resolving      GT[193][79] = 0
... DISKLIB-SPARSE: "E:\appliance50-17\appliance50-17.vmdk" : failed to open (14): Disk needs repair.
... DISKLIB-LINK  : "E:\appliance50-17\appliance50-17.vmdk" : failed to open (The specified virtual disk needs repair).
... DISKLIB-CHAIN : "E:\appliance50-17\appliance50-17.vmdk" : failed to open (The specified virtual disk needs repair).

What you should do is to immediately backup the whole VM's folder with all its files. Then use vmware-vdiskmanager.exe to repair the virtual disk. You can find the description as well as the binaries at http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1023856.

Somtimes such issues occur if you are running an antivirus application and did not exclued .vmdk files from being scanned. This can lead to false positives and destroy the contents of the virtual disk.

You can find the required files in the "Attachment" section of the KB article I mentioned. However, with VMware Workstation this tool is already included in the installation directory.

The error message/screen shot you posted may be a result of the damaged virtual disk, so it's important to first repair the virtual disk file and then see what needs to be done from within the guest OS. In any case make sure you have a backup!
