Independent Disks and backing up disks

I'm not sure where to post so any directions are welcome.

We have a linux solution that we are looking to virtualize. The solution has disk requirements for logging huge amounts of data.

If we go virtual, we do not need to backup or maintain this data between reboots.

1. If we make the log disk independent, it will not be backed up.

Does it make sense to also put this on a non-SANs drive? If we need to use vMotion what exists or steps will we need to take so that

the local disk gets recreated on the new host?

2. Snce we do not care for the logs, is there a performance benefit / hit to making it non-persistant?

3. If we have extra space in a partitiion (removed files), do those trash blocks get backed up using VDP or is there a way that we should

re-initialize the space to zeros so that the get de-duped and not backed up?

thanks,

jonathan
