vCenter Server plugin not compatible with 5.1.0a / SOLVED

I upgraded our lab vCenter Server to 5.1.0a version and noticed that this upgrade broke vCenter Server integration in vCenter Orchestrator.

During vCenter Server upgrade Orchestrator simply removed vCenter Server plugin silently, it took me a while to figure out why all my workflows suddenly stopped working. Once I figured out what was going on I started looking for a new vCenter Server plugin, first I went to VMware Solutions Exchange and found out that vCenter Server plugin listed in there is an old version (5.0.1), if you install this plugin in Orchestrator shipping with vCenter Server 5.1.0a you get "Installation corrupted (bad plug-in version)" message.

Eventually I found a vCenter Server plugin version 5.0.2 at Download VMware View 5.1 in my.vmware.com but this plugin is also reported as bad plug-in version with Orchestrator 5.1.0a. Btw, this vCenter Server plugin version was really hard to find as it is not listed in "vCenter Orchestrator Plug-ins" menu on VMware vSphere 5.1 downloads but it is listed in VMware View 5.1 downloads!

So, situation is that I cannot find any working vCenter Server plug-in version for Orchestrator 5.1.0a at the moment. Hopefully updated plugin will be released soon.

Hi Tomi,

Sorry to hear you are having troubles with the upgrade. Could you provide some more details? What version are you upgrading from - 5.1GA or 4.2? Standalone installation or appliance?

There are a few ways to get a copy of VC plugin file:

  • If you have a spare VM, you can try to do a fresh installation (not an upgrade) and get a copy of VC plugin DAR file from it.
  • If you have a program that can open ISO archives (like 7-zip file manager, WinRAR, etc.), you can open the installation ISO file and extract VC plugin DAR file. The plugin is located at VMware-VIMSetup-all-5.1.0-880471.iso\vCenter-Server\vCO\vCenterOrchestrator.exe\InstallerData\Disk1\InstData\Resource1.zip\$IA_PROJECT_DIR$\context\app-server_zg_ia_sf.jar\server\vmo\plugins\o11nplugin-vsphere50.dar

Thanks,

Ilian

Ilian,

This is Windows based installation, Orchestrator is running with vCenter Server on Windows 2008 R2 host. vCenter Server was originally 5.0 which was then upgraded to 5.1 GA with Simple Install, during this installation Orchestrator was not automatically upgraded so I ran Orchestrator installation manually. Last week I upgraded vCenter Server & add-on components from 5.1 GA to 5.1.0a.

I was able to extract vCenter Server 5.1 plugin from 5.1.0a install media with your tip. This plugin did install but vCenter Server connection is not working.

I am seeing following error in vco-configuration.log

Login & password are correct. I removed vCenter Server connection and re-configured it with not help. I have also restarted all services.

This is how Orchestrator configuration service look at the moment
