ESXi 5.0/5.1 and Compellent VAAI

I am having trouble trying to figure out the setup of VMware 5.0/5.1 using a Compellent SAN. I'm trying to gather information on the current VAAI setup but cannot get anything to come up.

Command:

esxcli vaai device list

Result:

Error: Unknown command or namespace vaai device list

It seems that the entire vaai command set is either not installed or not available and I have no idea why. I have multiple ESXi hosts running 5.0.0 U1, 5.1 upgraded from the previous, and clean 5.1 installs. I'm running vCenter 5.1, vCLI 5.1, PowerCLI 5.1. I have tried direct console connections as well as the remote shells.

Is there some package I need to install on the host to enable VAAI command set? Is there a service I need to start up?

The Compellent SAN is running version 5.5.3 firmware soon to be upgraded to 6.x - the Compellent Enterprise Manager is running 6.2.2.8 and my virtual machines using physical RDMs have the latest Compellent Agent installed. My main goal is to enable the Compellent Space Recovery which I have read and been told should be supported in my setup.

Any help would be appreciated in figuring out the VAAI namespace issues to start.

Thanks,

Scott K.

You are using the 4.1 version of the command.

Try this instead:

esxcli storage core device vaai status get

--Matt VCDX #52 blog.cowger.us

You'll need to get to version 6.x of Compellent Storage Center firmware for all of the VAAI primitives to be natively supported by ESXi 5.x.

Darin.
