Hardware version 9 and ESXi 5.0

We created a test machine on our ESXi 5.1 test system, and now want to move it over to production ESXi 5.0.  From what I've been reading hardware version 9 does not work on ESXi 5.0.  Is there a quick easy way to switch?  Change the vmx file, or should I break out the converter?

Thanks for the help.

No new features are used on the ESXi 5.1 test system.

With a test system I'd just change hardware version in the .vmx file. If this does not work, you may create a new VM and attach the existing virtual disk (.vmdk file) instead of creating a new one. If you create a new VM make sure the virtual disk doesn't have snapshots, since they cannot be selected in the GUI. If there are snapshots, you'll need to edit the new .vmx and make enter the latest snapshot .vmdk as the virtual disk. After editing the .vmx you need to reload the VM (remove from/add to inventory).
