Error using update manager: 'could not retrieve data from the update manager server'

Hi,

This seems like it might be a permissions issue but I'm unsure how to fix it.

We have a user here who has been given 'Administrator' access to a Datacentre (and child objects). When they try to run through remediation wizard they get the the section 'Host remediation options' and it returns the error 'could not retrieve data from the update manager server'. After clikcing on 'OK' they can continue but eventually they get an error which requests to report to Vmware.

I've gone through this process using my account (which has much higher privs) and I have no problem.

Can anyone tell me what might be causing it? It does seem to be a permission issue but I'm unsure what permissions are required to fix it.

Cheers,

Tim

Did you ever find the resolution for this? I just ran into it and the workaround I found worked was to put the engineer doing the work in the local admins on the vCenter server. Same as you I'd given Administrator from within vCenter to this person but they hit the same error.

I never really found an answer to this. Perhaps there's a KB\doc somewhere with a comprehensive brekadown of how permissions are applied in an VC\ESXi environment but I've not been able to find it. Getting the permissions right at the right level seems to be quite a challenge - in the end I just did it myself as I'm a top-level admin as it was erasier than spending ages trying to work out what permissions were ncessary. I'll revisit it some time when I have more time available.

Well the simple answer I could think of is this:

Administrator' access to a Datacentre (and child objects).

Can  you confirm if the user is given the access of update manager for  remediating and configuring? Attached screenshot from my setup.
