vCenter Infrastructure Navigator automatically discover application services, visualize relationships and map dependencies of applications on virtualized compute, storage and network resources. A component of the vCenter Operations Management Suite, vCenter Infrastructure Navigator enables application-aware management of infrastructure and operations to better understand the impact of change, provide more complete disaster recovery protection and minimize downtime.
- Automatically discover and keep up-to-date the names and version numbers of application components and services
- Visualize application relationships, communication paths and backend connections at the infrastructure, guest OS and application level
- Map dependencies of application components on the underlying virtual infrastructure to understand the impact of change and build disaster recovery plans with confidence
The use case you describe is more relevant to vFabric APM - VMware's perfomance management suit which among other capabilities, will alert and notify in case of application performance issues, unavailable services etc. take a look at http://www.vmware.com/products/application-platform/vfabric-application-performance-manager/overview.html
I looked at all the Infrastructure Manager documentation and couldnt find anything saying that it does alerting besides the normal vCenter type alerts.
So was I right that Infrastructure Manager doesnt do the kind of alerting we are looking for?
What's the difference between VMware vFabric Application Performance Manager and VMware vFabric Hyperic? It also looks like there is some third party Hyperic company. Is it 2 different things?
You are correct. vCenter Infrastructure Navigator is an application discovery, mapping and dependency visualization solution and not an application performance management one.
vFabric Application Performance Manager (APM) provides comprehensive application monitoring capabilities. APM installs with two components: vFabric AppInsight for Transaction and Code level monitoring (byte code instrumentation is courtesy of Spring Insight) and vFabric Hyperic for middleware and OS monitoring. More details and example of hyperic usage within APM can be found here : http://bit.ly/MsO5Dl
Well it looks like I'm giving vFabric a shot. I just wish there was one document that I can read to get a consise description of what needs to be downloaded, installed and configured instead of having to look all over the place at different documents.
For example the installation instructions say Download modifyMaxAge.sh from the AppInsight download page and run the script but I cant find the script anywhere and it doesn't say where to run it or how to get it in to the appliance etc. Then again they may be old instructions and not apply to the latest version.
Can you tell Im getting aggrivated?
Indeed in the latest version (1.1.1) you do not need the script you mentioned. My suggestion is to go to https://www.vmware.com/products/application-platform/vfabric-application-performance-manager/overview.html , click on “Download Trial” link and continue from there. There are clear documentation for both AppInsight and Hyperic.
I'll be happy to assist over a webex if needed. let me know.
I figured you didn't need the script anymore since it seemed related to an older version of the software. I have part of it installed but it seems there are way too many steps and the instructions are not clear, especially for setting up Hyperic. It seems like you need to be a developer to follow this installation guide!
