ESXi 5.1 host accepts no network connetctions

Hi guys,

I installed a new 5.1 ESXi Server from Scratch and there is no network activity!

Through boot process I can see the Intel E1000 driver is loaded.

The physical Link is up and shown correctly on Console too.

But there is no way to ping another host!

The Server was running with 5.0 before without any issues...

It happens with another Testserver too. Both with Intel Nics that were supported in 5.0.

Is there a new trick to get it work? ;o)

I gave it a static address...

Thx for any suggestions.

Usually this works without a trick. Can you confirm the host is plugged to a properly configured switch port (e.g. the correct VLAN in case of a managed switch) and the IP settings are all correct (e.g. no typos)? What about "Test Management Network" from the host's DCUI (yellow-gray console), what does it return?

Is the host and any additional network cards on the HCL.

Yeah I know. Normally there is no trick. It isn't my first ESXi. ;o)

Yes as described above no typos and u can see in the management network configuration the nic is up.

If I unplug the cable the state shows Disconnected.

No typos, we checked it twice and tested with two different Boards.

First is:           SuperMicro X7SBL-LN2

Second was:   Asus P8B-C/4L

Both of them working on 5.0 without any Problems.

Yeah Switch has no VLANs configured, so no problem.

about "Test Management Network"

It cant ping anything, except itself.

We got no more ideas... Smiley Sad

Thx for ur ones.

The NICs were definetly supported.

I don't mind about the host.

It was running, rock and stable with 5.0!

If its happened on another test server too, it might be worth redownloading esxi again just to rule out an iffy download and blow the install away and try again.

I have the exact same issue.  I have a server that was running ESXi 5.0 with the lastet patches.  I ran esxcli to update it to the lastest version and no network joy.  Tried to rest the network to defaults, no joy.  I even tried downloading the ISO and installing over the top, no update, and still no joy.  I went back to 5.0 and everything started to work again.   In the vmkernel log I saw some strange messages about it killing my network ports for FRP issues not found.  I took a screenshot of the error message if it helps someone figureout what the heck is going on.  I had to go back to 5.0 as this is my only box I have.

having exact same issues on a brand new DL580 G7 with the following NIC types...

NC375i with NC524SFP 10GB Module

Has anyone opened a case with Vmware?

OK..figured my issue out...

we have enabled 802.1q encap on the switch side so we need to add vlan IDs to each vswitch.

that fixed our issue.

sorry for the fire drill

The issues that I was seeing was just with the managment port and no VLANs.  I could see that the link was up but I could not ping from or to ESXi.

I'm also having this same issue with a Supermicro X7DCA-L dual socket CPU board. It's got two gigabit nics built in, and everything was working find on a 5.0 install. Did an upgrade to 5.1 and no network connectivity. Same behavior about if it's plugged into the switch, it's connected, and if it's unplugged, shows disconnected. Doubled check the switch port, tried different ones, etc. The Management network test from the console doesn't work. Failed on each try. I tried resetting the network, which "failed" and then both network adapters disappeared. Needed to reboot. After reboot, still didn't work. Did a system global setting reset. That didn't help either. IT came up, tried to do DHCP, which gave it an address, amazingly, but then it lost it within seconds.

I took a OVF Template of the VM's before I did the upgrade, so thankfully, I'll just import those on another ESXi 5.0.0 system to get back up and running. I'd like to get this 5.1.0 system up since it fully supports Server 2012 and we need to do some compatability testing with that OS and our software

To add some more info to this. I'm using a switch with VLAN 2 set for tagging on all ports, I never set any vlan tagging in the past on ESX servers. I looked at it as a possible answer based on an earlier reply to this thread. Set it to 2, set it to nothing, set it to 4095 (accept all vlans). No help. That still changed nothing. I rebooted after each vlan change.

Also, I noticed if I set the server to DHCP and rebooted it, it would actually get an address from the DHCP server, but It still couldn't ping, or have any network access. I tried disabling the firewall, that had no effect.

Anyone have ideas on what the issue may be? This server worked fine on 5.0 U1. The nic cards are Intel 82573L Gigabit Ethernet (2 of them built into the Supermicro Motherboard).

I had the same problem with some supermicro servers.

No vlans on either switch port or vSwitch. I downgraded to 5.0 and it worked like a charm.

OK, I'll join the party too.  I just got a Supermicro 1u w/ x7dca-l and 2 Xeon L5420's from ebay. I installed ESXi 5.1 with no problems until I needed to configure the management network.  It detects the presence of the network adapters, and also if I connect and disconnect the ethernet, however it cannot receive DHCP and if I configure a static, I can not ping anything.

Side note, if anybody has this system and has a loud fan noise issue, you can go into bios and change the fan setting to 3 pin workstation.  It decreased the RPM's from 10,000 RPM to about 8,000 RPM, while maintaining low CPU temps.

Found possible solution in another thread.  I did not try yet, and not sure exactly how to, but see if this helps.

Here is the link for the drivers that are said to work from my previous post.  Give it a try and hope that helps.  I don't currently have access to my machine to try.

Hi MikeJ,

The post you linked, seemed to mismatch as this issue because this issue couldn't connection on network even shown the NIC on ESXi5.1

So they change the driver it was used ESXi5.0 version instead ESXi 5.1 so it could problem solved.

But this issue was some different the NIC driver compatible.

Our server shown NIC on ESXi5.1 but It couldn't connect on network.

This is not VLAN problem because it couldn't connect even if changed 4096 or not set the VLAN value.

Hope you know it.
