If the guest OS vmware tools is showing as Out-Of-Date you can go ahead and upgrde the vmware tools on the VM's by selection Virtual Machine > Guest > Install/Upgrade VMware Tools

In general whenever there is an update available for ESX/ESXi vmware tools update would be require (NOT all patches for the host woul require vmware tools update)

to find out if a vm has out of date vmware tools go to the summary tab of a vm

it will say if vmware tools is out of date

if you want to know what vms are out of data for the tools site wide, you can use rvtools, or powershell commands.

I've outlined some steps already in my link a while ago.

Hi all,

Thanks for the replys,

how it identifis vmware tools are outof date. for example i installed a new esxi server and i install vms on that host after 2 months it says out of dates and again i use the same esxi iso and instally new host and vms now its out of date or ok.

how the vm knows the tools are out of date.

if we install any new update to esxi host it related to vmware tools then only the vms identify its tools are out of date, or it uses some other machanisam. Bascally how it knows the tools are outof date.
