Or do we use our 5.0 license keys??
Thank you, Tom
5.0 not 6.0
Please clarify your question.
For vShere 5.1 yes there will be license keys.. Which 6.0 Keys are you referring to..
5.0 not 6.0
The question is if we can use our 5.0 licenses in 5.1
Hi,
Version 5.1 will have it's own keys and you cannot use version 5.0 keys. You will be required to upgrade your version 5.0 keys to generate keys for version 5.1

Hope this information is useful

5.1 will have their own keys but you can upgrade your licencing for free if you have vSphere 5.0 Enterprise Plus

Hey Gregg, where did you read that? My understanding is that the 5.x keys will work for 5.1. That's how it was with 4.x keys as well.
I can't find any mentioning in the documentation. So 5.0 keys should work for 5.1.

To upgrade a product to the new version:
The system deactivates your current license for you. The new licenses are delivered in the same folder as the original license key. If any quantities of the current key remain un-upgraded, new licenses keys are generated for the remaining portion of the current product and be displayed in the confirmation process.
The ability to upgrade a license key depends on:
If you cannot upgrade, contact the Super User associated with that particular account or VMware Support.
Upgrades will be available on the portal shortly after VMware vSphere 5.1 becomes generally available. All license keys with active support and subscription contracts with an end date on or after General Availability are eligible for an upgrade.
Hi,
In my previous post I provided the link for Licensing 5.1, find the link again - http://www.vmware.com/products/vsphere/upgrade-center/licensing.html#How2Get-Lic
Below is part of the document that explain how to get vSphere 5.1 licenses

Hope this clarifies every doubts about vSphere 5.1 licensing

Probably worthwhile making a distinction between ESXi 5.1 and vSphere 5.1
I've just upgraded a Server which was running ESXi 5.0 U1 on a USB stick with a RAID1 SATA Datastore, to ESXi 5.1 by running the ESXi 5.1 installable CD and upgrading ESXi 5.0 U1 on the USB stick. Somewhere along the upgrade it mentioned that i had 60 days to get a new license, but when I ran the vSphere Client (5.1.0 Build 786111) and connect to the ESXi 5.1.0 (Build 799733) and check Licensed Features, the License Key shows as never expiring and it is the license key i used when i did a new install using the ESXi 5.0 U1 installable.
So, for this scenario, it looks as though you don't need a new license key.
Yep very true
You can have ESXi 5.1 hosts in a vSphere 5.0 environment but if you want to use the new vSphere 5.1 vCenter and additional features that are part of the vCloud 5.1 Suite then you will need new licencing

I verified , no new keys are needed, it uses 5 keys, with customer support.

I've just done the vCenter 5.1 upgrade (from 5.0), and it seems to be quite happy using our previous key. I'm going to do the vSphere 5.1 host upgrades next, and am not expecting any difference. If I look in My Vmware keys, and select 'upgrade', there are no valid keys listed for the 'upgrade' to 5.1, so yes, I'm also assuming that all 5.0 keys work in 5.1.
The only possible issue is that there is currently no Essentials Plus in 5.1, just Standard, so I've got to upgrade a host to see what this now displays as in vCenter.
There's an info field in the myvmware licensing portal today, stating:
All vSphere 5.0 and vCenter Server 5.0 keys work with vSphere 5.1 and vCenter Server 5.1.
Guess it should be clear now
Regards
looks like it
Hello,
I currently doing the upgrade from 5.0 to 5.1 and I'm getting a message saying the keys for previous version of vCenter Server are no longer valid, so the product nay not work after installation. Did you get this as well?
No, you can use the same license key of 5.0 if you want to upgrade to 5.1.
I have confirmed with VMware support
