Can A VMFS datastore (SCSI Target) be attached to Virtual Machine in a host ?

Hi:

I am able to create a SCSI target using FreeNas and I am able to add

it to the storage on a particular host. (Screenshot attached) But, I could

not attach it to a  virtual machine attached to that  host.

Is a VFMS datastore created by the SCCI target attched to the host only?

or can I attach it to the virtual machines (attached to the host)  also?

IN fact, the NFS datastore  created by FreeNAS cab be attached to the individual Virtual Machine

in a host. I am expecting the same behavior for the  SCSI target approach ?  Is that possible?

PLease let me know.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

You can add the SCSI target to a VM as a Raw Device Mapping (RDM) but make sure the LUN is empty, don't format it as VMFS. To add it edit settings on the VM you want to attach it to and select add an additional hard disk - select the type as RDM then select your SCSI target. Unless you have a specific reason to use Physical RDM (like clustering with a physical server that shares the same LUN) select Virtual RDM so you can still use features like VM snapshots.

Hi Mittel:

Thanks for your response. Really helpful.

The RDM option is greyed out in my case(Screenshot attached)

I wll dig into it. Atleast now I know the procedure.

It is not found in any book or KB.

Thanks for your help.

rdm is most likely greyed out because there is no known raw storage presetned to your host.
