however, i can't get Update Manager 5.0 to install. no matter what i try, the installation aborts with "Error 25005. Setup failed to generate the SSL keys."

Hi,

try stop the vCenter Update Manager service before starting the setup...

Have you rebooted the server after installing vcenter, before running the update manager install? I've seen this happen, and a reboot did the trick.

ok. this is a bug in vUM. just got it escalated to VMware level 3 support. they confirmed it's definitely a bug.

they solved it using a webex session and i didn't really pay attention all the time but what they did is they copied some certs they had already prepared to the vUM destination folder. after doing so the installation finished successfully.

thanks for your feedback guys.

During the VC istallation, installer will ask for UserName, Organization & License Key.
If the given Username doesn't exist or wrong/bad, this error message will appear at end of the installation and installation will be rolled back.

The "Error 25005" problem has also been observed with the vSphere WebClient installation.  The proven fix for my deployment (fresh vCenter install on Windows 2008 R2) was to copy the openssl.exe binary to the appropriate target folder.  In my case, I performed a search for openssl.exe in the %tmp% directory (dropped there by previous vCenter installation steps).  There were multiple copies and file sizes so I chose the most recent and copied it to "C:\Program Files\VMware\Infrastructure\vSphereWebClient\openssl.exe".  The installation was then able to complete successfully.  Although the KB advises that UAC be disabled, that is not an option in my case and UAC is running without issue and installation was a success.

This worked for me.  Copy openssl.exe to the directory you state above...  What a PITA.
