Researching prior to upgrade from ESX 3x to ESXi 5
The thought is to point the 3x to vCenter 5, upgrade (wipe / reload) the hosts to ESXi 5 (without vum) - Then upgrade the tools and virtual machine hardware.
Found a statement: (http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-50/index.jsp)
■ | For VMware Tools and virtual machine hardware upgrade operations, Update Manager works with ESX/ESXi version 4.0 and later. |
■ | For ESX/ESXi host patching operations, Update Manager works with ESX/ESXi 3.5 and later. |
■ | For ESX/ESXi host upgrade and migration operations, Update Manager works with ESX/ESXi 4.0 and later. |
These statements refer specifically to the HOSTS, correct?
Is there a backward compatibility limitation for the vCenter 5 / Update Manager regarding the version of virtual machine hardware?
How do I find what version of virtual machine hardware my guests are on?
Thanks
