VCenter 4.1 to 4.1 update 2 upgrade failed

The VCenter was a single VCenter 4.1 using MS SQL 2005 Express (default install)

I was trying to upgrade it to 4.1 update 2

When updating via installer DVD, i choose to install a new instance of sql express and tried to restart services as it suggested (all default options selected) but it failed to restart the service. I just choose to continue.

After reboot, i installed the new vsphere client from the updated vcenter and when logged in, i cannot find any hosts and datastores.

I'm currently restoring from backup image I had done before the upgrade process with clonezilla

How exactly I had to do to make this upgrade successful?

Why did you choose to install a new instance of SQL? You should normally do an in place database upgrade when updating.

Did you select "Yes, I want to upgrade my vCenter Server database”?

The new SQL instance would not contain any of your previous VCenter db entries. For this reason the inventory would be blank.

yes, i had forgotten about that. So after restore, i re-run the vcenter installer/update and choose to use the current DSN (SQLEXP_VIM). Although the upgrade succeed, there's no database upgrade prompted.

thanks
