Write down the info inside the file.
remove the file.
Create the file again and put the old data back by copying it inside, now you are able to write changes to it...

To force overwrite with vi use
to force save and quit
I have tried :wq! and it still fails with the same error. I will try to remove the file, create a new one (adding the original lines back in) and report back.
Did the file changes survive a reboot? I'm trying to edit a different file but needed to do the same sort of recreating the file to edit it. However when I reboot it goes back to the original.
