Installation of VMWare Workstation 8 failing

Trying to install VMWare Workstation version 8 on Windows 7 x64 and I am getting the following error:

The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 25028.

I was previously running version 7.1 fine and the version 8 installer had me uninstall that version before proceeding with this version.

I am logged on as a user with local administrative privledges and have UAC disabled.

From what I can see in the VMWare log files the error seems to have something to do with vmwarevmcisockets64.msi failing.  I have attached the log files.

Thanks

Joe

Hi Joe,

In your %temp% directory you should have a log file named "vminst.log".  Can you please attach that file?  That should give us some clues about why vmci failed to install on your machine.

Thanks,

Joel

By any chance are you runnging the program "AppVerifier" on your machine?

Thanks that looks like it.  I searched for "Application Verifier" on the Start menu to bring up the App Verifier UI and then disabled all of the tests and deleted all the applications that it had listed.  Once I did that I was able to successfully complete the setup process for VMWare.

I honestly do not remember installing the Application Verifier, perhaps it came as part of the Windows 7 Application Compatibility toolkit, http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/aa905066.aspx, which I had installed.  Although just uninstalling this toolkit did not remove the Application Verifier component.  I still had to go into the application verifier and disable the tests and delete the applications in it.

It's possible it got installed as part of some of the other Visual Studio development tools I had previously installed.

Thanks for your help, appreciate it.

Hi,

I am having exactly the same problem. However I did not have AppVerify installed. So.. to prove it to myself. I installed AppVerify - still no good. I have since removed AppVerify and still hvae the same errors.

can you - using right-click run as admin - use regedit and read and edit this key HKLM\SOFTWARE\VMware, Inc. ?

Could someone who's still running into these install failures, but not running AppVerifier, take a look at a couple things for us?  It seems like a common error in setupapi.dev.log is the following:

dvi: {Plug and Play Service: Device Install for ROOT\VMWARE\0000}
ump:      Creating Install Process: DrvInst.exe 18:44:39.735
ump:      Server install process exited with code 0xc0000142 18:44:39.748

What happens if c:\windows\system32\drvinst.exe is launched from the command line?  Does it spit out any failure messages?  One possible helpful debugging step would be to run drvinst.exe through the dependency walker available here - www.dependencywalker.com and see if there are any missing dependencies.

Thanks.

I went into this problem when deploying VMware Workstation 8. Something's wrong with the Installer package {528E2373-AE49-4802-B4A8-326BBFDAD6A0} in vmwarevmcisockets64.msi. However I've been able to work around by running the installation from the command line below:

VMware-workstation-full-8.0.0-471780.exe /s /nsr /z DATACOLLECTION="0" TRANSFORMS=":1033" REMOVE="VisualStudio,Keyboard" HOSTD_HTTPS_PORT="443" DATASTORE_PATH="X:\XXX\Shared Virtual Machines"  REBOOT="ReallySuppress" COMPONENTDOWNLOAD="1" DESKTOP_SHORTCUT="1" QUICKLAUNCH_SHORTCUT="1" AUTOSOFTWAREUPDATE="0" ADDLOCAL="ALL" STARTMENU_SHORTCUT="1" SERIALNUMBER="xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx"

I was able to move past this same error after disabling McAfee's Host Intrusion Protection.

Hi,

I've had a very similar problem on Windows 7 64-bit...

- Upgrading to VMWare Player 4 fails with error code 25028

- Attempting to reinstall VMWare Player 3 seems to go Ok, but the VMware Network Adapter connections are not created, as well as no USB support

- The error seems to be here:

tools-build-462819: 10/13/11 17:54:12 Cannot query key value HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\VMware, Inc.\Wnd: 2
tools-build-462819: 10/13/11 17:54:12 Failed to get window text: 0

tools-build-462819: 10/13/11 17:54:13 Posting error message 25028

- FWIW: I've had the same problem installing SonicWall Global VPN Client (this installer reports 'The request is not supported' to the user).

** Uninstalling McAfee Spyware and Virus protection has solved both VMWare and SonicWall problems **

Thank you, JFC!

I also ran into this issue. I found this thread through Google, and studied the log files that were menioned. I'm

not running AppVerifier, but I am running Outpost Security Suite Pro 7.5 which was the prime suspect.

Anyway, I decided that before I try something wilder to run the install a second time, and lo and behold - it worked!

I'm attaching some of the log files, in case VMware finds them useful. The one called vminst-1.log is from the installation that failed.

I don't know if it's relevant, but I had applied a number of Windows updates without rebooting, before I ran the VMware

installation, which uninstalled 7.1. The VMware 8 installation commenced directly after the reboot.

Hi,  I, too am having this issue.  Your command line fix did not work as it failed again:

20111120100702:ERROR** HandleError:   Message: [The MSI 'C:\Users\DUSTIN~1\Temp\vmware_1321801525\vmwarevmcisockets64.msi' failed.]

I agree that there MUST be something wrong with this particular package.  Vmware, please fix!!!!!
