Hi,

Without downtime it woud be a risk, what I have done in the past is first increase the size of the virtual disk using vSphere Client then remove the drive from the VM and add it as a secondary VM with the same OS, and use DISKPART to increase the drive. KB http://kb.vmware.com/1004047 provides detailed info.

Arun

Hi, If it is windows 2008 we can increase the c: (OS partition) online. For 2003 try the following. I'm assuming you trying to increase the c: which is the OS partition and this is the only partition in the vmdk...

1. Shudown the VM

2. Attach the VMDK to some other VM

3. increase the vmdk size as per your requirement

4. This VMDK will appear as Disk 2 in the VM to which you attached

5. You can see the partition in the VMDK and some unallocated space next to it

6. Now enter diskpart -> select the disk you attached to this VM

7. Select the partition you want to extend from the selected disk

8. Then type command 'extend' and now you can see your partition will be extended to the given size

9. Now you can detact this hard disk from the temporary VM and attach it back to the original vm and boot from it

Please have backup of the VMDK you are extending before starting the process... Please let me know if you need any clarification...

NOTE: You can't extend the partition if the free space is not appearing next to it in disk management. Example, you have c: and d: in a single harddisk. Consider you have free space appearing next to d: then you can't extend c: with available free space but you can extend d:.

Hope this helps...
