vmware-vdiskmanager -R fails in about 90% of the cases I have tried it
vmware-mount is very unreliable on 64bit hosts
if you can still use it to create a clone of the corrupt.vmdk you are lucky
if that also fails try to extract / read the data using a 32bit windows host with vdk.exe or winimage.exe
