I guess this won't be available before vSphere 5 will be released (from what I read in a blog post on August, 22nd)

You can currently only (from the download link):

Pre-register to receive a 60-day evaluation of vSphere 5.  You will be  notified by email once vSphere 5 is available for download.

That's what I thought, is that I read a KB that mentions vSphere already available in version 4.0, so I thought strange.
Thanks a.p

From the link you provided:

How does VADP compare with VCB?

Unlike VCB, which requires customers to download and install a separate component on VCB proxy server, VADP is built-in as a part of the backup product. The following table summarizes the key differences between VADP and VCB.
It looks like ESX 4+ has this ability already configured and some backup software vendors (CA, Symantec, CommVault, etc) have agents that can use it to back up the virtual machine files directly.

VADP is just a set of API for data protection (aka backup) of virtual environment.

It was introduced from vSphere 4.0.

Would anybody know if VADP can be used to "script" VM backups using vDR ?

I've seen 3rd party products that seem to support this API but VMware's own products are not mentioned?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Venkatfuture,

vStorage API for Data Protection is not something you can download and install. It is a set of APIs from VMware that backup vendors can use for integrating their products to protect vSphere environments. When you buy backup software with vStorage API support, the required VADP components are already bundled in it.

If you are looking for a free product with VADP support, consider downloading VMware Data Recovery 2.0. Alternately, you can buy backup products like Backup Exec if you are looking for additional features.

Warm regards,

Rasheed
