I'm unable to power on a virtual machine. At first I received this error:
File <unspecified filename> was not found
Then I tried moving to a different snapshot and received another error:
An error occurred while communicating with the remote host
It never did move to another snapshot - but the ESX host itself immediately disconnected. I reconnected it. Now when I try to power on the VM again I get another error:
Host CPU is incompatible with the virtual machine's requirements at CPUID level 0x1 register 'ecx'. Host bits:
0000:0000:1001:1000:0010:0010:0000:0001 Required: x000:0x0x:00x0:1xx0:xx10:xx1x:xxxx:xx01 Mismatch

Which version/build of ESX are you running?
Was the snapshot taken with the same version/build or has there been an update to either the software (ESX) or the host's firmware/BIOS after the snapshot was taken?
Please attach a list of files in the VM's folder as well as the vmx file.

This is ESXi 4.0.
The VM was created on ESX 3.5. Some of the snapshots were probably taken on ESX 3.5
Then the VM was migrated to this ESXi 4.0 host.
The virtual hardware is version 4 not 7.
Firmware might have been updated since snapshots were taken. But main thing is it's running on a different, upgraded host.
There was an issue with the first build (GA build) of VMware ESXi 4.0 regarding the CPU masks. Please take a look at http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1011294 and follow the steps given to reset the CPU masks for the VM and then try to start it again.

After I go into "Edit Settings" -> "Options" -> "Advanced", All the options under "CPUID Mask" are greyed out
It also happens to me the first time, but since I look for solution through suggestion on threads i read. I corrected the errors and right now I have no problem so far. I have learned from the link you shared. It is a good source of information
Hi ,
I think you need to restart HOST . ( Cant power on VM registered host )
Before reboot the host please migrate resource from one host to another host ..
Thanks & Regards,
