ESX 4.0 to ESX 4.1 - migration

Guys,

I have ESX 4.0 and Vcenter 4.0 in my environment. VC server is windows server 2003 64bit and with oracle database. I have to migrate all of my hosts to ESX 4.1 and I think I must have to migrate VC also to 4.1.

So, my question is How can I migrate VC server 4.0 to VC server 4.1. After this I would migrate each of my hosts from 4.0 to 4.1 using pre and upgrade package.

please help me if I am wrong in my plan. I have to migrate it but never did it before. thanks

Migration paths are documented in http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r41/vsp_41_upgrade_guide.pdf

For vCenter you can simple make an upgrade: install the new vCenter, use the existing DB connection, and it will perform an upgrade.

Then upgrade VUM to 4.1 and use it to upgrade the hosts.

The migration guide mentioned above wil cover this for you - amnd you are doing a relatively minor upgrade.

It is pretty low risk, but of course always worth backing up your database.

One day I will virtualise myself . . .

Yep, should be pretty straight forward. I recently went from 4.0 to 4.1 on my vCenter and hosts. It was a breeze with VUM.

One more doubt , do we have to put new licenses for this or the 4.0 license will server the purpose. Also, for host also is there diffrent license ???? will my host also needs new license or the same will do?

There isn't a license specif for vSphere 4.1.

Simple use the same vSphere 4 license that you have.

Also for vCenter the license is the same.

In order to manage ESX/ESXi 4.1 you need to install the vCenter 4.1

thanks for the answers.

So, i have decided to go for upgrade. First I will be upgrading the database to 64bit 10.2.0.4 ent and then move to upgrade vcenter. I have downloaded 4.1 iso and have a question suppose my db has upgraded to 64bit and we are connecting vcenter through 64 bit dsn then how would I do for vum? vum needs 32 bit dsn to be connected. please help me with this.

VUM still need a 32 bit DSN to work.

Hi Guys,

Here I have checked another link and it says to run backup for the vc server from data migration.

http://terenceluk.blogspot.com/2010/11/upgrading-vmware-vcenter-40-to-41.html

so, I just wanted to know if I have vc server installed and wanted to upgrade it to 4.1 do I have to run this datamigration tool and follow up with this.

Currently , I have vcenter 4.0, windows 2003 64bit os, 10.2.0.2 oracle database( which has to be upgraded to 10.2.0.4),

what I was thinking is of upgrading the db first and then put the dvd for vcenter 4.1 and install vcenter 4.1 through upgradation and then upgrade vsphere client to 4.1.

here;s the link I saw in support for this.
