Only enterprise Plus supports Distributed Switches, required by the Cisco Nexus software. As per KB http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1010579.

Because you need the Distributed Switch functionality , you must use Enterprise Plus licensing.

The virtual Nexus v1000 extends the Cisco functionalities inside the Virtual Network environment. Beside all Cisco advantages over the standard vSwitches, this allows your networking team to administrate it without the need to touch the VMware product.
