Failback Question for VM Networks

guys

Since I got Server with only dos pNICs I have to have VM - Admin - Vmotion on those 2.

so I decided on vSwitch Settings

NIC Teaming

Load Balancing: Route based on the originating virtual port ID

Network Failover Protection: Beacong Probing

Notify Switchtes: Yes

Failback: Yes

Failover Order

vmnic0 - vmnic1 as Active Adapters no Stanby Adapters

Now since I had to configure 2 VLAN I configured them this way as well as Management Network

Management Network (Vmotion - Admin IP):

Overrride Switch Failover Order marked:

Active Adapter

vmnic0

Standby Adapter

vmnic1

VLAN200 (VM Network) and VLAN300 VM Network)

Overrride Switch Failover Order marked:

Active Adapter

vmnic1

Standby Adapter

vmnic0

my questions are do I need to setup Failback to Yes on Management Network - VM Networks?

Failback: Yes ?

or it is only need at vSwitch Level?

Now another scenario. 4 4 NICs

Let's say I have 2 NICs only for VM Networks should I select both active for VM Networks? I mean what would I have a standby NIC If I can have oboth Active?

thanks a lot

If you have Failback enabled on the vSwitch the setting will propogate down to the VM portgroups and VMkernel ports. With 4 NICs go active for both NICs.  In that case you wouldn't have a standby.

thanks so I'm OK with what I've configured

Now one more question

I am right now at ESXi 4.1 U1

I am testing the failover Stuff but I see this command

# esxcfg-vswitch -U vmnic0 vSwitch0

completely remove the vnic from vSwitch no when I put it back Failover stuff won't apply...so my idea is was to disable nic like simulated only removing the cable

i've try this command without luck

# esxcfg-nics -s 10 -d half vmnic0

Error: Invalid argument: Invalid argument

any other way to take a nic donw from command line?

thanks  a lot

The syntax you have works fine for me.  But if the switch port is set to auto,  it won't take the nic down.  The switch port will need to be set to a static  speed / duplex.  If you're using different types of NIC you would try to unload the driver.
