VDI solution together with server vm

Hi!

I have started building (on papper) a solution that includes Win servers and VDI desktops.

Do anyone have experience on this subject?

If you look at this questions:

  1. Shall I mix servers and desktops on the same storage?
  2. Shall I mix server and desktops on the same hypervisor?
  3. Is there anything that can give me a bottleneck even if I have really fast machines and storage?
  4. Is ESX set to only send 32 packages at the time when accessing storage?

Best Regards

Mikael

  1. Shall I mix servers and desktops on the same storage?

VDI has different storage requirements that you need to consider, for example utilising SSD's to minimise boot storms. You will need a decent SAN with a mixture of storage to meet the performance requirements of the desktops.

2. Shall I mix server and desktops on the same hypervisor?

OK for a test or pilot, but if looking to deploy into a live environment then you will need dedicated VDI clusters - Vmware have documentation on the design of a POD for VDi you should look at.

3. Is there anything that can give me a bottleneck even if I have really fast machines and storage?

Yes - it is the same for any virtual environment - you need to plan and understand what you are virtualising - in VDI you need to perform an assessment of the physical desktops using a tool such as liquidware labs.

    4. Is ESX set to only send 32 packages at the time when accessing storage?

    Don't understand the question.
