Error when VDR backup virtual machine with large HDD

Hi all,

I have a datastore : 1,47 Tb capacity

I asign HardDisk (type Thin) for a virtual machine  1,45 Tb from this datastore

I cannot use VMWare VDR to backup this virtual machine , error during VDR create snapshoot.

Reaion is insufficient datastore for snapshooting ?

This case,  what  should i do ?

This should happen also when you trying to take a snapshot of this VM, that is happening because you left the default value of the block size when you create VMFS.

The only way to resolve this issue, without destroying your VM, is to create a new data store (VMFS), and the block size that you are going to choose should be 4MB or above.

Then migrate your machine on the new VMFS and then you will be able to take snapshot of your VM.

if you do not have the luxury of having a new VMFS datastore, the only way would be is to use VMware Converter to store it elsewhere, format the existing and then again using the same tool to convert back to a newly formatted vmfs datastore.

with size of datastore is 1,5Tb i think should using block-size is 8Mb .

Yes use that block size and normaly the VM should also perform faster.

Block size is not stricly related to performance...

But use a standard size for allo datastores is a good idea.
