multiple vCPU vs cores per socket

I would like to gather opinions on the topic of mutliple vCPU vs cores per socket.

I am trying to determine if you get the same performance from a 2 x vCPU vm VS a 1 x vCPU x 2 cores vm?

Thanks in advance.

There is no difference in performance, only a difference in the presentation to the guest OS.

Absolutely the same. This is just a way to present CPU cores to guest OS / applications for licensing purposes. For example, Windows XP does not allow more than 2 CPUs. By default all cores are presented as multiple CPUs single core each. But if you have 1 quad CPU and you want to give full power to your VM?

Technically in standard SMP system there is no difference for guest OS between multiple CPUs and multiple cores.

ok.. thanks i had to check. As we ran a test with 1 proc and 2 cores and could easily peg the cpu with the cpu.vbs script and i was surprised the cpu wasnt just humming at around 70% or so. But completely maxed. But i know the vm will have more threads available.
