Private virtual infrastructure design

I'm looking for some good strategies for creating segmented areas of the virtual infrastructure where administrators can delegate limited control to to users of their own vms. I'm open to solutions and strategies such as software based applications that plug into vmware or using what already exists in VMware - any reference docs would be helpful too.

The concept is that some groups of vms need their traffic segmented from all other LAN users but able to commicate among themselves and able to reach the internet. All vms for these users are in vSphere. Another goal is to limit licensing costs by allowing them to use an existing vSphere environment and purchasing as few extra licenses as possible - giving them limited admin functions but not control over whole environment.

vCloud director will do this - but there is a cost associated with it.

If you want something more cost effective then PVlans will also control VM communication - but you need enterprise plus licenses.

For delegated admin vSphere is very granular in that respect.

Two ends of the spectrum - fully automated with a cost or cheapish and cheerful

- almost 1 Esx 4.x with a lot of memory

- knowledge about vshields edge

- Lisences Smiley Wink
