ESXi SAN Boot

Hi,

In my environment we have NetApp Storage and HPXP storage. Could you please let me know which storage is best for ESXi SAN Boot and Virtual Machine VMDK creation.

What HP XP model do you have? I have not worked much with NetApp arrays so I can't speak to that. But I have worked with all HP XP models from the XP12000/10000, XP24000/20000 and the new P9500. They should all work fine with ESXi.

It'll probably come down to preference and which box you feel more comfortable with from a management stand point, especially if your intended use is to test out vSphere Beta.

Same applies to NetApp arrays - it works with ESXi and it is up to you and your requirements.

First you can find out the support by looking at the hardware compatibility guide http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php.

Both HP and NetApp storage arrays works with ESXi and you can use it for SAN boot and deploying VMs. Based on your storage requirement like speed, capacity, multipathing etc. you can decide on the storage array model to be used in your ESXi infrastructure.

To get more details on ESXi Boot from SAN and to do the configuration you can refer to the section "Using Boot from SAN with ESX/ESXi

Systems" in http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r41/vsp_41_san_cfg.pdf

Hope this answer your question. If you have any specific questions please update this forum.
