Had the same issue. I had to run the vmware tools uninstall script and then manually remove all VMware Tools related directories from /tmp and /usr/lib/vmware-tools
and then just install tools from scratch.
Probably reconfiguring the vmware-tools service. By changing your directory /etc/vmware-tools and running vmware-config-tools.pl . You should run this script every time after a kernel recompile or update.
vmware-config-tools.pl worked for me but it was in /usr/bin
