vMotion compatibility Processor Xeon 54xx and 55xx (enable EVC?)

Hi everyone,

i have this question as usually i deal with clusters with identical CPUs, now we are migrating from 3.5 Update 4 to vSphere 4.1.

In the process we will add 2 HS22 IBM blades to our present HS21 XM blades. The new blades will have ESXi vSphere 4.1 while the old ones have ESX 3.5 update 4; vCenter will be 4.1.

I will need to move all virtual machines from the old blades to the new ones using vMotion so i found this KB article (http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1003212) but i only found that family 54xx highest EVC baseline is Intel® Xeon® 45nm Core™2 EVC Mode while family 55xx is not considered in the article.

I wonder how should i configure EVC for this to work and even if EVC is needed to perform vMotion between these processor families that are different but pretty close technologically.

Just for the records the old HS21 XM will be removed from the cluster and reinstalled with vSphere ESXi 4.1 since we are moving from the ESX platform to ESXi, and then re-added to the same cluster.

I hope someone will be able to clear this up for me since i admit i am no specialist about processor features and families and browsing trought the documentation is not always so easy in this subject for me.

So, forgive my ignorance, i should set it wit the highest EVC baseline that in this case seems to be Intel® Xeon® 45nm Core™2 EVC Mode, am i right here?

Yes you are.

The 55xx Series is listed 3 lines below the 54xx Series.
