Linux(host)/Win7(guest)-Poor Performance On Good Computer?

Hi,

I am running current VMware Workstation 7.1.2 build-301548 for Linux 32bit.

My host OS is Ubuntu 10.04 32bit Linux

and my guest OS is Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.

My host computer is as follows:

  • Ubuntu 10.04 32bit Linux

  • Intel Core2Quad 2.4GHz 4 core CPU

  • 8GB DDR2 RAM

  • nVidia GeForce GT240 1GB PCIexpress graphic adapter

  • 1TB Western Digital hard disk drive

My guest virtual machine is configured as follows:

  • Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit (licensed clean install)

  • 4GB RAM

  • 1 CPU with 2 cores

  • 250GB hard disk drive(auto expanding)

  • NAT network adapter

  • Sound card using "ALSA: Default sound card"

  • Display using "Auto Detect" w/ 3D Graphics: "Accelerate 3D Graphics" on

(all other virtual hardware has been disabled)

After the Windows 7 64bit guest OS loads, it feels very sluggish.

I have tried different settings but have not been able to get guest running smoothly.

(I have installed VMware Tools and updated the host's nVidia driver to their current)

Anyone have any ideas on how to fix these performance issues with Win 7 guest?

Hope someone can help!

Thanks!

Jesse

You say your are running 32 bit Ubuntu, does "top" show all 8GB of your memory (might if your PAE support is loaded)?

What do you get from uname -a?

Try cutting the processor setting for your guest to 1 cpu, 1 core for testing.

To get good performance, you need to run the VM's on a different hard drive from the OS.

In the root directory of the VM's files you can find a vmware.log file - please upload it. Also boot the VM with just 1 vCPU.

You may also have an incorrect HAL installed see:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309283

This is for Xp and win2k3 but it should apply for windows 7. I had this issue when I installed the VM I changed the vCPU two 2 and have problems. When I changed it back they went away.

Hi,

I reinstalled the Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

into a new virtual machine.

I placed the virtual machine onto a separate hard disk drive

and selected only 1 CPU with 1 core.

Performance of virtual machine is much better now.

I have this new problem though:

I have current VMware Workstation 7.1.2 Linux 32bit version.

I have an Ubuntu 10.04 32bit Linux host

with a Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit guest.

I installed S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl

game using Valve's Steam client.

When I run the game in the Win 7 guest virtual machine

the game's mouse cursor does not work properly.

(when move mouse, game's cursor jumps erratically)

Anyone know of a solution for this issue?

I tried playing with Input Preferences of VMware Workstation

but they had no effect on this issue

Hope someone can help!
