WMware ESX server 3i (3.5.0) -> VMware vSphere Hypervisor (ESXi 4.1)

Hi

Is there any easy way to upgrade from ESX Server 3i (3.5.0) to VMware vSphere Hypervisor (ESXi 4.1)? (I see there are upgrade files from ESXi 3.5)

Hi,

Welcome on the forum.

No, the only way is to perform a fresh install for ESXi 4.1.

IC, thank you!

I was wondering if I could maybe upgrade ESX 3i to ESXi 3.5, and then from there to ESXi 4.1? But I guess not then.

Anyways, we have to machines with ESX 3i. Can I move all the WM's to one machine, then wipe and install ESXi 4.1 on the other, then move the WM's to the newly installed ESXi, then wipe and install the other, and lastly move back some of the WM's. Is this a viable route?

Does the upgrade from ESX 3i to ESXi4.1 make sense? I mean will we loose any features (ESXi 4.1 beeing a free product)?

Yes, i guess these is the most viable solution.

According to me, it makes sense to upgrade to ESXi 4.1, because ESX will disapear at the next release. I don't think you will lose a lot of features from ESX 3.5 to ESXi.

Surely make sense. You will not loose any features. Make sure the hardware is listed under the HCL at http://www.vmware.com/go/hcl

Also... according to this KB, you should be able to upgrade the ESX 3i: http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1019239

I would recommend, anyway, the reinstallation. Is easier and faster.
