reboot order for VMs in a cluster

Hi all.

I've got a vCenter Server 4.1 (HA, VMotion, DRS enabled) and a cluster of 8 ESX 4.1 running perfectly, with some VMs on it.

I was asked if it was possible with vCenter, to reboot three VMs in a specific order, not matter which ESX there are on. At first, i thought about a rule on the cluster so as to regroup them, but then i realized it wasn't possible to specify the order of boot, but only that they could be (or not) on the same host.

Does anyone have an idea about how to solve this problem?

Thanks a lot.

Hello.

This sounds like a possible use case for vApps. You can put VMs in the vApp and then specify the startup/shutdown order of them.

Good Luck!

Hi,

As VMroyale said, you can use vApp to accomplish this task.

I have used this feature to shutdown an entire Sharepoint Farm, where the Sharepoint servers are turned off in first place, and the Database servers later. When you start the vApp, the VMs are started in the opposite order.

As everyone has already said this sounds like a perfect use case for a vAPP. I recently took a VMware class in which the entire class was setup in two different vAPPS and it allowed us to specify shutdown/startup order. You can also set resource limits on top of the vAPP just like you would a resource pool. You can find some documentation for vAPPS on page 127 of the guide, http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r41/vsp_41_vm_admin_guide.pdf.
