vCenter 4.0U2 installed in a VM - should it be running VMware tools?

We originally had vCenter 4.0U1 running in a VM and the VM had VMware tools runnings as 'Ok'. I did the upgrade to 4.0U2 and everything completed successfully. However, I noticed that VMware tools now shows as not installed on the vCenter VM. I manually intiated the VMware tools install but the installer noticed a version already installed. I can't see the tools icon in the system tray of the OS nor can I see the VMware tools service listed under Windows services. What is the normal status for VMware tools on the vCenter VM?

No reason it should not be - your vCenter may be a special VM but it is a VM none the less. Try re-installing the VMware tools as it looks like the last installation removed but did not install.

Trust this is of help.

Kind regards,

I fully agree with Glen.

VMware tools should be installed on every VM (if they are provided for the specific OS). They include drivers for the virtual hardware, memory management (e.g. ballooning) and other useful things which optimize the guest OS. vCenter Server is nothing special, it's just a Windows system with an application and - depending on your setup - an SQL Server.

I have a similar problem. I updated to Update 2 and installed VMware Tools on all VMs except one which has vCenter Server installed.

It says there is an error 1719 Windows Installer... the thing is that I can install anything else but VMware Tools...

Now I wanted to ask is this because I have vCenter Server installed on this VM or maybe something else???

The problem is only with this one VM, other are updated just fine...

I tried to do the uninstall and got this error "Error: Network error accessing C:\Windows\Installer\VMware Tools.msi". There was no way around this error after trying a few things. According to other threads, it sounds like I have to delete some registry keys and manually rip it out. I don't get why the vCenter 4.0U2 (from 4.0U1) put the VMware tools in this state.
