Unable to add ESX 4.0 Hosts (U1 or U2) to vCenter (Agent not installing)

I have a number of ESX4 hosts that when adding to a vCenter implementation sit on a Status of "In Progress" with details of "Uploading vCenter agent installer to host". After waiting 15mins or so the error "Cannot install the vCenter agent service. Cannot upload agent" is seen, and the host remains disconnected. If I then try to reconnect, I get "Cannot complete login due to an incorrect username or password) popup, them am presented with the add host wizard connection settings page.

Performing a "rpm -qa | grep vpxa" on the host, returns nothing.

vCenter Server is installed as a VM on an ESX 4 host, and that host is able to be added. No other host works. I can ping every device and enumerate dns.

Each ESX host (and the vCenter server) are all listed in DNS. The vCenter server is running on Windows 2003 R2. Firewall is off.

Anyone come across agent installation issues like this before? I've seen some KB articles on ESXi, but not ESX.

Many thanks for any suggestions.

I've had this problem, you have two ways to resolve, the reinstalling ESXi, or applying the same patch update that will install a newer agent.

I think it is more viable you apply the patches that is sure to solve.

Two things... I have tried to reinstall ESX (not running ESXi due to the requirement to add in 10GBe NICs on an IBM Bladecenter). Have also rebuilt the vCenter server too...
