VMware Player v3.1 is now out. You can download it from:

http://downloads.vmware.com/d/details/player_310/ZGp0YmQqQHdiZHR3ZQ==

I would start with that since it could fix the problem and you get new functionality! Please let us know if that resolves your issue.

Can you temporarily disable your virus / IDS software for the installation and try again?

I got this same error today, "Error UI timed out". Using XP SP3 32bit fresh install, all firewalls disabled and no AV. All three versions do the same thing. 3.1, 3.01, 3.0.

I have had this problem today and thought I would share my resolution.

It appears that the Vmware player install uses java to display the installation UI. It references the internet explorer security settings for operation of java script. In the case of my machine, I am running Windows XP SP , but recently had to run a repair on windows. This rolled back IE to IE7 and it wouldn't launch on my PC (not noticed for a while because I use firefox)

To fix the vmware player install issue, I removed IE, reinstalled with IE 8, reset security permissions for running javascript in the IE security settings and then reran the install file and it installed just fine.

Mr. Rodgers:

You found the true solution regardless of all the requests for .log info.

Solution that works for ANY VMWare installer :

1. start a DOS box ( by typing "cmd" in the Start button text field for example )

2. make a temp directory, for example, c:/temp

3. change directory to where you've downloaded VMWare Installer

4. extract the .msi installer from the .exe by running the following command in DOS

             cmd /C  <your VMWare Installer name>.exe -e c:/temp

5. when the command returns, you should see a "VMware Workstation.msi" and *.cab in c:/temp

6. Run VMware Workstation.msi by double clicking on it in Windows Explorer, or use msiexec

Done

This worked perfectly.  As soon as I upgraded IE to IE8, VMware 9 Install worked perfectly.
